What is Summerween?: And Why It's So Popular.

 

Depending on what side of TikTok you're on, it is extremely likely that you have heard of Summerween. Personally, it’s one of my favorite aesthetics/ parts of the platform to engage with. There’s just something about it that makes complete and total sense. 

But what is Summerween? Where did it come from?

Summerween originates from the 2012 Disney show Gravity Falls. It’s the show’s first Halloween special, and it’s explained in the show that locals like Halloween so much that they celebrate it twice a year. 

Cool idea, right? Only makes sense that people would eventually apply it to real life. So what exactly does Summerween look like? 

To start, Summerween is a cool mix of the summer and fall aesthetic. You still get the candles and pumpkins, but you also still get the carnival vibe and warmth of summer. Overall, Summerween heavily leans on that camp slasher vibe. 

It’s a great excuse to watch the Halloween movies we so enjoy and dress up in camp-like attire. Carve watermelons like pumpkins and bake Halloween-themed treats. Have themed picnics and shop for spooky decor. Light a candle and read spooky stories. 

For those of you who want to take the summer aesthetic out and bring fall to summer, Summerween allows for that, too! During rainy days, light candles and wear comfy PJs. Keep the lights low and turn on your fav fall-related show (for me, it’s the classic Gilmore Girls). 

Decorate to the part of your aesthetic of your choosing. 

There are honestly so many possibilities. 

When it comes to Summerween, there are plenty of creators to get great inspiration from. One of my personal favorite creators to watch during the season is @zaires.spooks on TikTok. She’s always doing cool outfits inspos and aesthetic vids.

I think Summerween is so popular because there's a sense of comfort and fun associated with Halloween. Summer, while fun, is also the perfect time to bring that camp slasher feel to life and enhance it. It’s the only season close enough to still give us some sort of Halloween vibe. Not to mention, many of us can finally really take off at some point to do all the things we might not be able to during the regular Halloween season. 

I plan on participating in Summerween to the fullest this year.
